Useful ally? - Urban Trees PhD student in Manchester
Hi folks.
I am a Whalley Range resident concerned about the future of our trees.
Round about March this year, i bumped into a PhD student, Mohammad Rahman, who was analysing soil moisture content on Manley Road. We chatted about MCC's felling programme (he knew nothing about it - despite the A4 warning signs on trees!)
Specifically we also discussed the Council's dubious claim that trees were 'over-mature' (which, to my knowledge, has never been clearly defined). The student (who is quite an expert) laughed - as he said, by definition, there is no such thing as 'over-mature' trees - no more so than there are over-mature humans or other species!
He is quite a lover of trees - & their beneficial impact on city-dwellers. He certainly knows his stuff.
I asked if the WRT-group could contact him for his expertise in the near future. He gave the following contact details:
mohammad.rahman-3@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk
Or (as i can't quite decipher his handwriting)...
mohammad.rahman.3@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk
The title of his PhD study:
"Impacts of Climate Change on Urban Trees".
I thought it might be helpful to share this.

Over Mature
‘Over Mature’ is in fact, a very well established and defined term when applied to trees in both forestry and arboriculture although both will define it slightly differently as both industries have differing objectives.
The fact that a PhD student studying Urban Forestry does not recognise the term perhaps says more about his tutors and his own lack of reading than it helps further this thread.
